ANOTHER ASTRO BOY："JETTER MARS"

From February 3rd to September 15th, 1977, all 27 episodes of the TV anime "Jetter Mars" produced by Toei Animation, based on the original work by Tezuka Osamu, were broadcast on Fuji TV. "Jetter Mars" was originally planned as a sequel to "Astro Boy", and Mars was an "Astro II", created by Dr. Ochanomizu based on blueprints designed by Dr. Tenma. There are a large number of prototype drawings of Mars designed by Osamu Tezuka, take a look for yourself. None of these were final, only potential designs.

There is also a surviving proposal for "Mighty Mars" written by Osamu Tezuka:

"The year is 2015... 

Dr. Ochanomizu, the Director of the Ministry of Science, has resolved to create a new robot. He is making preparations using all the power of Japanese science and technology. Dr. Ochanomizu cannot erase from his mind the image of Astro Boy, who soared into the sun to save the Earth and disappeared. (The final episode of Astro Boy)

"I want to recreate that super-human Astro Boy once again... And I want to give Japan hope for the future, where apocalyptic theories are rampant due to pollution, earthquakes, and so on. Now is the time for Astro Boy..."

This was the doctor's wish.

But unfortunately, Dr. Tenma, the former Minister of Science and the genius who created Astro Boy, had already been banished as a madman, and his whereabouts have been unknown for a long time.

When Dr. Ochanomizu finally found out that Dr. Tenma was living out the rest of his days as a hermit in the deserted surface of Mars, he flew to the Mars base in a spaceship.

"I want to revive Astro Boy, and I need your intelligence. Come back to Earth with me."

But Dr. Tenma stubbornly refused, and instead gave Dr. Ochanomizu a detailed blueprint.

It turned out to be a top-secret blueprint designed by Dr. Tenma to modify Astro Boy to be more human-like.

Surprised and delighted, Dr. Ochanomizu returned to Earth and used the blueprint to start preparations again.

He decided to name the completed robot Mars after Dr. Tenma.

And almost a year later, Mars was completed.

Mars is to be the second coming of Astro Boy. A more human variant, almost a hybrid between human and robot, a magnificent thing.

He has the kind of emotions and feelings that one would expect. He has delicate psychological movements, and on top of that, he has all of Astro Boy's powers and more.

And as such:

1. He can demonstrate 1 million horsepower strength.

2. He can fly in the sky by flying in a magnetic field. (Same principle as a UFO).

3. He can do any calculation in 3 nanoseconds.

4. His ears are 1000 times stronger than Astro Boy's were.

5. He can remember smells and locate things (where smells are) within a 100m square.

6. He has hardware that can speak 100 languages.

7. His butt can become a machine gun.

8. He can tell if another person is good or bad.

9. He can imitate any voice.

10. He can analyze substances in his stomach and cause chemical changes.

11. His eyes can become searchlights.

12. He can shoot slime from his fingertips.

Some of these abilities are just improvements on Astro Boy's abilities. But, the biggest problem is that it had costed 1 million yen.

The International Robot Control Organization (IRCO) is concerned that the robot "Mars" made in Japan has a huge amount of strength, 1 million horsepower.

This is a dangerous ability, and if it is used improperly, it could destroy human civilization...

So, in order to really use 1 million horsepower, calm judgment is necessary, and for that, Dr. Ochanomizu must be careful.

But something even more troublesome awaits. Mars, who is too human, is selfish, self-centered, and a little ditzy. So he doesn't listen to Dr. Ochanomizu very often.

In addition, because he still has almost no social education, he makes mistakes, causes trouble, and is tempted by others, and every time this happens, the doctor has to clean up after him.

It's just like a 21st century Pinocchio. What's more, if this "Pinocchio" is misused, it can even conquer the world.

Mars has been kidnapped many times, from kidnappers who demand ransoms to international secret organizations.

He also runs away from home and settles in a human's house...

Each time, he ends up running away on his own, but as he gradually comes to understand the morals and systems of the world, he becomes a well-behaved child.

It is fortunate that he is able to learn little by little about "truth and love," what he lacks most.

Ahead of Mars is a world of peace and love and sincerity between humans and robots, humans and nature, and between humans and other humans."

Tezuka Osamu also wrote the synopsis for the early part of the series.

In the end, the "Astro Boy" influence was removed, and Mars became the main character, "Jetter Mars."

Mars does not have seven powers like Astro Boy, and only has the power to fly in the sky and physical strength, with his scarf turning into triangular wings. Dr. Tenma and Dr. Ochanomizu are now Dr. Yamanoue and Dr. Kawashimo.

A new character, Miri, a robot created by Dr. Kawashimo who acts as an older sister figure for Mars, is also added.

The overall theme of the story is Mars's personal growth.

With Mars' voice provided by Mari Shimizu and Dr. Kawashimo's voice provided by Hisashi Katsuta, it gives the impression of being a direct imitation of "Astro Boy", but it turned out to be a different work from "Astro Boy".

Tezuka Osamu tried to create a completely new "Astro Boy" for various reasons, and so he ended up with "Jetter Mars", which is somewhat similar to "Astro Boy".

もうひとつのアトム：「ジェッターマルス」

７７年２月３日より９月１５日まで手塚治虫原楽の東映動画制作テレビアニメ「ジャットターマルス」全２７話がフジテレビで放映された。「ジェッターマルス」は当初「鉄腕アトム」の続編として企画されたものであり、マルスは、天満博士の設計図をもとにお茶の水博士がつくった「アトム２抵」だった。手塚治虫がマルスそをデザインした原画が大量に残っているので紹介しよう。すべて決定稿ではなく、候補である。

手塚治虫が書いた企画書「マイティーマルス」も残っている。〈時は２０１５年．．．科学省長官、お茶の水博士は、新しいロボットの創造を心に決め、日本の科学技術の総力を結果して準備を進めます。お茶の水博士の脳裏には、地球を救うために大陽へ飛びこんで消えていったアトム（ 鉄腕アトム最終回）のイメージが消えなかったのでした。

『あのスパらしいアトムをもう一度再生したい．．．．．．そして公害や地震等によって終末論が盛んな日本に、未来に対する希望を与えたい。今こそアトムが必要なのだ……』

これが博士のねがいでした。

だが残念なことにあのアトムを創った天才科学者、前科学省長官の天満博士は、すでに狂人として追放され、その行方は昔としてわからなかったのです。

お茶の水博士は、ついに、天馬博士が世捨人のように火星のサバクの果てで余生を送っていることを知り、宇宙艇で火星基地へとんで行きます

「アトムを復活させたい、それにはキミの頭脳が必要だ。わしと一緒に地球へ戻ってくれ」

だが天馬博士は、かたくなにことわり、その代りに精密な設計図をお茶の水博士に渡します。

それこそは天馬博士がアトムをより人間らしく、改造するための、極秘の設計図だったのです。

お茶の水博士は驚喜して地球へもどり、その図面をもとにもう一度、準備をしなおします。

そして出来上ったロポットを、天馬博士

にちなんで、マルス(火星)と名付けるこ

とにしましたそして、ほとんど1年後、マルスは完成しました。

マルスは、アトムの再来、いやもっと人、間っぽく、いわば人間とロボットの混血鬼ともいうべき、みごとなものでした。

ゆえかな感情と情緒。そしてデリケートな心理の動き、その上にアトム以上のお威力を備えていました。

つまり、

1. 100万馬力を出すことが出来る

2. 磁場飛行で空をとべる。(円盤と同原理)

3. どんな計算でも3秒で出来る

4. 耳の力がアトムより1000倍。

5. 匂いをキャッチし、100メートル四方のものの(匂いの存在の)場所をかぎつける

6. 百ヶ国語をしゃべることが出来るハードウェアが備えられている

7. おしりがマシンガンになる

8. 相手が善人か悪人か判る

9. どんな声でも出せる

10. おなかの中で物質を分析し、また化学変化をさせることが出来る

11. 目がサーチライトになる

12. 指先から粘液を出せる。

この中にはアトムが持っていた能力をそのまま改良したものもあります。が、しかそし、なによりも１００万円になったことをが大問題であったのです。

「国際ロボット管理機構（Ｉ．Ｒ．Ｃ．Ｏ）では日本で生れたロポット「マルス」が100万馬力という、莫大なエネルギーを出すことに脅威を感じます。

これは危険きわまる畸型である下手に行動させると人類文明を破壊することになりかねない。……

そこで、ほんとに100万馬力を使うためには、冷静な判断が必要であり、そのためにはお茶の水博士が許可を与えなければならないことになりました。

しかし、さらに困ったことが起ります人間すぎる程人間的なマルスはわがままで、自分勝手で、すこしお人好しだったのです。

ですからなかなかお茶の水博士の言うことを聞きません。その上、まだ社会的教育がゼロに等しいために、失敗したり、人騒がせな事件をおこしたり、他人をそそのかしたりしますそのたびに博士が後仕末をしなければなりません。 

それはまるで２１世紀のピノキオそのもの

でした。

おまけに、このピノキオは、うまくあやつれば、それによって世界をも征服し得るのです。

マルスは何度も人にさらわれますは身代金はしさの拐魔から、大は国際的な秘密組織までです。

またフラフラと家出したかと思うと、人間の家に住みついたりします。……

その都度、結局は自分のカで逃げて来るのですが、次第次第に世の中のモラルや、仕組みが判って来るにつれ、マルスはしつかりした子供になって行きますことに、マルスに一番欠けている「真実と愛」について、すこしずつ学んで行くことが出来たのは幸いでした。

マルスの前途には、人間とロポット、人間と自然、そして人間同志の豊かな愛情と誠意の世界が開けて行くのです。〉

手塚治虫はシリーズ初期のシノプシスも手がけている。

最終的には「鉄腕アトム」色は取り除かれ、マルスを主人公にした「ジェッターマルス」になった。

マルスにはアトムのような7つの力はなく、マフラーが三角翼になって空を飛ぶ力と腕力だけである天馬博士、お茶の水博士のふたりは、山之上博士、川下博士になった。

そして、川下博士のつくった、マルスのお姉さん的存在のロボット、美理が新たに設定された。

物語全体はマルスの人間的成長をテーマにしている。

マルスの声を清水マリ、川下博士の声を勝田久が演じたことなどで、「鉄腕アトム」の一番煎じのイメージが強いが、「鉄腕アトム」とはまた別の作品に仕上がっている。

手塚治虫はまったく新しい「鉄腕アトム」力さまざまな事情でをつくろうとしたー、「鉄腕アトム」とちょっと似た「ジェッターマルス」ができたということである。
